The Blue Door, where compassion and sustainability intersect in the heart of Marlborough.

Welcome to The Blue Door, where compassion and sustainability intersect in the heart of Marlborough.

We lead by example, promoting environmental responsibility, encouraging recycling, reusing, and restoring unwanted items.

Since 1998 we've been dedicated to supporting our community, providing affordable items to Marlburians in need by on-selling donated goods through the Blue Door store.

Our focus is strategically directed towards moving-on goods that are most essential to our community. Your generosity helps us create a positive impact and lasting difference in the lives of those we aim to assist.

What sets us apart is our commitment to giving back – all profits contribute to financial grants for local not-for-profit organisations, totalling over $1,000,000 since inception. With a diverse range of donated goods, from furniture to clothing, every purchase at The Blue Door fuels a sustainable model, ensuring our continued positive impact on Marlborough.

Join us in creating a brighter, more compassionate future through supporting The Blue Door.

Shop, Recycle, Reuse

In 1998 the opening of Marlborough's first recycling shop was the brainchild of Beverley Kingston who wanted to make donated surplus household effects available to people in need. The concept of recycling was very novel at the time but by 2001 Marlborough people had become converts.

Thanks to Beverley’s foresight you can discover an abundance of affordable, preloved goods at The Blue Door. Explore our diverse range of donated items, including furniture, beds, kitchenware, books, clothing, hand-held garden tools, crockery, collectibles, and more. Our shelves are regularly replenished with community-contributed stock from supportive locals.

When shopping at The Blue Door you can acquire preloved items at a fraction of their original cost and actively support recycling, reuse, and repair practices. Every purchase plays a vital role in our commitment to our sustainable and community-driven initiative by keeping items out of landfills and offering them a second or third life.

Large whiteware, complex electronics, and automotive items are outside of our scope, but we do work in with like-minded community groups and can often recommend where to drop those items.

Donations ... and How to Donate

Contributing to The Blue Door by donating goods no longer needed in your life, plays a pivotal role in our mission to recycle, reuse and repurpose.

It’s like adding a sprinkle of magic to our community! Your possessions don't just clutter your space—they become treasures that make a real difference. When you generously give, you're not decluttering; you're creating a ripple effect of goodness within the community.

Everyday items, the ones that spark joy and have a story to tell, are the things we most cherish. From the cozy nook of your living room to the heart of your kitchen chaos, we welcome those gems that will bring smiles to the next owner. By allowing them a second or even a third chance to shine it's not just recycling; it's giving items their own fairy tale ending! So, whether it’s an estate pack up, annual spring cleaning, removing gently used items from the linen cupboard, or just clearing out the garage after the kids have flown the nest, we’ll open our doors and gratefully receive those treasures.

While we gratefully welcome donations twelve months of the year, it's essential to know that we do not accept or on-sell large whiteware items, televisions, computers, and related accessories (e.g., printers, keyboards), house parts or car parts. We also have safety criteria to uphold and test all donated electrical items and check each individual donation to ensure it is safe for re-use.

And remember, all profits from the sale of donated goods are reinvested through annual grants to not-for-profit groups to further support our commitment to the community.

The Blue Door Grants ... and How to Apply

The Blue Door Board administers an annual funding round for local based, not-for-profit organisations. Criteria and details about applying can be found on the Blue Door website, while dates and application timeframes are also published on the Blue Door Facebook page and in local newspapers closer to the time.

Each Marlborough-based, not-for-profit organization is eligible to submit one application per year.

Application forms can be downloaded from our grants page or you are welcome to pop into the Blue Door store at 46 Seymour Street, Blenheim and pick up a hardcopy from the counter. Applications for grants are only accepted within the designated open time frames, advertised yearly.

We encourage all eligible organizations to apply and are thrilled and proud to have supported a wide variety of community groups from children through to adults, encompassing sports clubs, cultural clubs, afterschool groups, and Church groups, and including building projects, health and safety equipment purchases, and craft material purchases … to name a few.

What does your not-for-profit organization need help with? We are all about shared commitment to community support.
